Common Air Conditioning Repair Symptoms:
Here are a few symptoms and their potential causes for air conditioning repair and service. Is your air conditioning not blowing cool air? There could be a few problems here. First make sure your thermostat is set to "cool" and the fan is set to "auto".
Auto makes the air blow from the air conditioning vents only if the house is too warm. If the thermostat is set to "Fan On", that means that air will blow through the vents even if the air conditioning system is not needed (if the house is cool). If the fan is set to "auto" and the system is on cool, make sure the temperature is set below ambient.
If the room temp is 75F and the air conditioning is set to 76F, then it won't start. Now, if the temperature in the room is above the set point, go outside and see if the air conditioning system is running at all. The fan on the condensing unit should be running. If it is not, then you need a service call for air conditioning repair.
If the outside unit is running, and the air from the vents is still not cool, then your air conditioning repair technician will have to look at a few things.
Is the Freon level low? If the freon is low, then you need a to have it recharged. Air conditioning repair with freon recharge is not complicated, but it really depends on how low the freon level is. Yearly air conditioning maintenance will help keep things running smoothly. If the freon is very low, there could be a leak. The air conditioning repair technician will need to find the leak, repair it and then recharge the freon level.
Is the compressor running? If the compressor is not running, people usually think it's time for a new air conditioning system. This could be true, but isn't always the case. Sometimes the air conditioning contactors are damaged, and can be repaired quickly. Sometimes the wiring has been damaged (field mice can do this). In this case, you will need air conditioning repair service.
If the outside unit isn't running at all, but the furnace is running, then there could be an electrical problem. The contactor could be damaged, the relay on the furnace could be damaged, a fuse could be blown, or the signal wires could be damaged. Your will need an air conditioning service repair call to have this determined.
If nothing happens at all when you turn on your air coniditioning system, the problem could also be at the furnace. It could be that the signal from the furnace to the air conditioner is not being sent or that the furnace module is not working properly. This will require an air conditioning repair service call also.
